Mimosa Brunch at The Tasting Room

Mar14
March 14, 2013 by VineSleuth 1 Comment

Houston Wine Scene Button

For those of you lucky enough to live in Houston, all four The Tasting Room locations offer a new take on the traditional mimosa Champagne brunch.

Rather than just offer one orange mimosa, the Tasting Room offers a selection of fresh, house-made juices and purees to go along with their list of sparkling wines.

The experience is totally custom, and a lot of fun, too. I checked it out at the CityCentre location.

First we picked a bottle of bubbles for the table, which are all discounted during brunch, with bottles ranging from $34 – $139,  and then we picked a few fruit juices.

Fruit Juice Mimosa Brunch

We went with the Argam Cava at $34, and white peach, raspberry, strawberry and blood orange juices to start. Then we mixed and matched and tried all the combinations we could concoct. I liked that I could try so many things and didn’t have to commit to one from the start.

My favorite turned out to be the white peach, with the Blood Orange in a close second.

We also indulged in some of their delicious brunch dishes:

Crab Cakes and Eggs

Fruit-Juice-Mimosa-Brunch-Crab-Cake-and-Eggs

Chicken and Biscuits

Fruit Juice Mimosa Brunch- Chicken and biscuits

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes

Fruit-Juice-Mimosa-Brunch-pancakes

(Ummm… is it safe to admit there were only two of us and we sampled all of that??)

And yes, they tasted even better than they looked–each and every one.

The crab cakes had a great kick with the jalepeno, yet they were not nearly as spicy as I imagined they would be. They were rich and delicious and a great Texas nod to eggs benedict.

The chicken and biscuits were what I would imagine a southern grandma making back in the day (or do they still do that?), but made modern with a touch of arugula salad and a truffle vinaigrette. The coating on the chicken was perfectly crisp, the gravy was creamy, and the salad made me think that maybe my brunch wasn’t as unhealthy as it was. (Okay, that probably didn’t make up for the rest. But a girl can dream.)

The lemon ricotta pancakes? Those were like dessert…fresh, sweet and perfect. Yummmmmmm.

If you’re in Houston, swing by any Tasting Room location on a Saturday or Sunday for brunch.  You’re sure to love it!

The four Tasting Room locations are:

  • CityCentre
  • Uptown Park
  • River Oaks
  • Kings Harbor in Kingwood

Texas Wineries

Mar5
March 5, 2013 by VineSleuth 1 Comment

Houston Wine Scene

Earlier this year I visited a thriving winery, helped prune the vines, and was home just about two hours later. And I live in Houston, Texas, in case you forgot.

Paradox House Vineyards

Did I hop a jet to California? New York’s Finger Lakes? Of course, not! I drove to Industry, Texas to Paradox House Vineyards, which grows grapes for Pleasant Hill Winery and Haak Vineyards and Winery in Santa Fe, Texas.

Paradox pruning Amy

Before this I had absolutely no pruning experience and no gardening experience of any kind to speak of. But, as I got there, I was handed some clippers and given basic instructions. So off I went, clipping away the extra parts of the vines so that the vineyard team would have an easier job doing the more specific pruning later.

I joined a group of about 30 other volunteers in the vineyards, many of whom had volunteered vintage after vintage. I was definitely the newbie. I’m still not sure how I ended up on Doug and Linda’s invitation list, but I am so thankful I did.

I loved knowing that I was helping to contribute the wines that would come one day, and I also enjoyed chatting with everyone, just listening to their stories. We talked about wine, of course, but we also talked about travel, child rearing,  farming, politics–pretty much everything, as we clipped and clipped down each row.

Paradox pruning volunteers

And then, once we were finished with one block, we moved on to another, until all the vines were pruned and we headed to the house for Doug’s delicious Texas chili and wine.  The wine was made from the Blanc du Bois grapes from another vintage, and we had a few other wines as well–our reward for a morning of work.

A few of my fellow pruners also brought homemade wines to share, and there was plenty more visiting. They talked about harvest in the heat of summer through the years and Texas vineyards helping each other out. Children laughed and played on the lawn and parents, grandparents and friends enjoyed lunch, wine, good weather and great company.

I might have started out as the lone stranger in the bunch, but I ended up feeling almost like family.

Paradox pruning chili

Texas Wineries

You might think you need to be in California, Oregon, Washington, or New York to experience the wine country, or you may also think that you need to be a wine writer.

But living here in Houston puts us so close to some wineries that produce delicious wines and can give anyone who wants it a full winery experience, just a few hours away from home.

Don’t believe me?

Just ask Houston’s own Russ Kane, who has been discovering Texas wines for years and reporting on his impressions through his blog, VintageTexas, and in his book, The Wineslinger Chronicles: Texas on the Vine.

The Wine Slinger Chronicles shares the stories of Texas wineries, winemakers and winery owners in a way that any lover of Texas or wine would enjoy. I promise this book is not just for wine geeks, it’s for anyone who likes to read interesting stories, and we all know that Texas holds a countless number of great stories!

Reading Russ’s blog or his book will open your eyes to so many winery experiences and wines that are very close to home.

(If you’re in Houston, you can get your own copy of The Wine Slinger Chronicles at Brazos Books, Barnes & Noble, and online at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, or an author-signed version at Russ’s website.)

Paradox pruning vines

Another great site that reports on Texas wines is Texas Wine Lover, written by Jeff Cope, who, along with his fiance, Gloria, has visited more than 170 Texas wineries. Jeff also maintains a listing of Texas vineyards as well as wineries, so if you’re looking for either a winery or vineyard to visit, Jeff can probably guide you in the right direction.

Both men have inspired me to learn more about my home state’s offering in wine, and I hope you find they do the same for you!

Taste Wines with 7 Houston Sommeliers at Philippe

Jan21
January 21, 2013 by VineSleuth 3 Comments
Vanessa Philippe Sommellier Series

Vanessa Trevino Boyd, resident Sommelier at Philippe

If you are in Houston and can clear your schedule for a few Wednesday evenings to explore some new wine with people who know and love wine, I’ve got an event for you…

Phil’s Wine Lounge, which is downstairs at Philippe on Post Oak near the Galleria, is hosting a seven-part series with seven of Houston’s best sommeliers. Each session, a new sommelier will take the spotlight and share about a different region of wines. While they share, you get to enjoy four wines and a paired cheese board. And it is only $40 per session!

In my humble opinion, that’s a great price for exploring wines with these somms… think of all you can learn each night and all the new wines you’ll try. I LOVE this!!

Check out this schedule:

  • February 6: A Trip to Austria with Fred Jones of The Pass & Provisions
  • February 20: Cutting-Edge California Chardonnays with Jason Sherman of Brennan’s
  • March 6: Syrah is Back with David Keck of Uchi
  • March 20: Sparkling Wine—Its Non-Champagne Counterparts with Sommelier James Watkins
  • April 3: Ungrafted: Wines from Deep Vines with Christian Varas of River Oaks Country Club
  • April 17: Bandol: The New Uber-Hip Wines with Kelly McCloud of Fleming’s Steakhouse
  • May 1: Italy Off the Beaten Path with Adele Corrigan of 13 Celsius

The series is hosted by Vanessa Trevino Boyd, resident Sommelier at Philippe and last year’s Food & Wine pick for one the top sommeliers in the country.  I’ve already shared a bit about Vanessa here on VineSleuth Uncorked.  She knows tons about wine and is so great about sharing her vast knowledge without being  intimidating. I can only imagine that she’ll do a great job hosting these other somms, too.

Want to sign up? (I know I do). Here are the details:

WHEN:                      Every other Wednesday, February 6- May 1, 6-7:30 p.m.

WHERE:                  Phil’s Wine Lounge at Philippe/ 1800 Post Oak Blvd

COST:                     $40 per person, includes four wines and a cheese board.

CONTACT:              Seating is limited to 15 people per event. To reserve your spot, email kgarver@philippehouston.com.

Then, if you’re on Twitter, tweet me @VineSleuth and we’ll make plans to share a taste together.

Hope to see there you tomorrow!

Spec’s Bear Dalton Presents a Four-Week Wine Class

Wine 101 Class with Spec's Bear Dalton

Houston’s own wine legend and Spec’s fine wine buyer, Bear Dalton, will be offering a four-part wine 101 class this January as part of the Wine School at l’Alliance Française.  The class will meet Monday evenings at 7, January 7-28, and will explore tasting, winemaking basics, and sparkling and fortified wines. Participants will taste 40 wines from around the world as they learn. The four-part series cost is $200 per person cash ($210.52 regular) for all four sessions.

The series is designed for those just developing their interest in wine, and want to get a great start, as well as those who feel the need for a thorough review to help organize their tasting and thinking about wine. It’s  also a good place to start for a service professional looking to move more into the wine side of the restaurant business or anyone looking to move into the wholesale or retail wine trade. Basically, it’s a great starter course as well as refresher.

Here’s what each week will cover:

Week 1: Why Taste? Starting at the beginning: The basics of tasting (1/7/13)

Tasting wine versus drinking wine. Sensory evaluation. Types of tasting. Blind tasting. Playing “The Options Game.” Ten wines will be tasted. Additional topics will include proper glassware, wine tools, and the restaurant wine ritual.

Week 2: White wine making and white wine varieties and styles  (1/14/13)

We will taste ten white wines including Chardonnay with and without oak, off-dry whites, and sweet dessert wine. Topics will include how grape growing and winemaking affect wine style and flavors and how the types of wine represented by those tasted pair with food. We also will talk about wine storage and wine preservation and the concept of terroir.

Week 3: Red (and Rosé) wine making and red wine varieties  (1/21/13)

We will taste ten red wines representing a range of styles and varieties including new world versus old world comparisons. Topics will include how grape growing and winemaking affect wine style and flavors and how the types of wine represented by those tasted pair with food. We also will talk about age-ability and age-worthiness as well as wine keeping and wine collecting.

Week 4: Sparkling Wines (ranging from the Charmat bulk process wines – such as Prosecco – to real French Champagne) and Fortified wines focusing mostly on Port (1/28/13):

We will discuss grape varieties, styles, techniques and their impact on flavor. We will discuss decanting and decanters and pairing these unusual partners with food.

Ready to sign up or have questions?

Call Marlo at 832-660-0250 or send her an email at MarloAmmons@specsonline.com.

All sessions of this class will be held at l’Alliance Française, located at 427 Lovett Blvd. l’Alliance is on the southeast corner of Lovett and Whitney (one block south of Westheimer and two blocks east of Montrose).
