I met Mary in the Wine Department at H-E-B Vintage Market while I was grocery shopping and hoping to pick up a new bottle of wine to try. She saw me wandering, came up and asked how she could help. I already love shopping at H-E-B, but this made me love the store even more. It’s great to find someone in a grocery store who really cares about wine and can guide customers in making good selections.
I soon found out that Mary has been working in the wine world for 10 years. She moved to Houston from Central Coast California and began working as a Wine Steward at H-E-B. She said her passion for wine has been an ongoing quest to learn anything and everything about the subject, and her job with H-E-B has provided an opportunity to travel the world and share her experiences with her customers. Sounds pretty good to me!
Now, she is sharing her experiences with all of us with her 5 Wines to Enjoy…
Mary’s Top 5 Wines to Enjoy:
One white wine under $20 and widely available in the US:
- Palacio de Bornos Verdejo
This wine is a great value (way under $20 and was featured on the front cover of Wine Enthusiast.) Zesty, clean, and refreshing, this Spanish white is perfect for our Houston weather!
One red wine under $20 and widely available in the US:
- Ondarre Reserva Rioja
Another Spanish wine and another great value. This wine was in the Spectator top 100 and the 2004 is still available! This amazing blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo is complex and delicious.
One splurge (whatever splurge might mean to you):
- Ramian Estates Chapter 8
This Bordeaux blend from Mt Veeder Napa Valley is predominately Cabernet. Decant and enjoy this unbelievably bold and rich wine.
…and two others of her own choosing (these may be either easy or hard to find):
- Clone 7 Reserve Cuvee
This bold and complex wine is from Napa Valley and is full bodied with black fruit character with soft ripe tannins.
- Chain Gang
A bold Zinfandel based red blend from Sonoma – complex and luscious! If you are a Prisoner fan, you must enjoy this at half the price. Cheers!
And yes, all of these wines are available at H-E-B.
