In 2009, Amy was a frustrated consumer, tired of gambling at the grocery store or restaurant when a sommelier was not around to help. She began listening to other shoppers’ challenges, as well, and soon got to work learning about wine and the wine and grocery industries, and established herself as a wine writer in print, broadcast and internet media. Along the way she recruited and directed a team of experts in wine, sensory science and statistics to create a new way to objectively characterize wine using sensory science and build out a personal preference learning algorithm. VineSleuth and Wine4.Me were born.
Amy earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Florida and lives in Houston with her husband and three children.
Lead Sensory Scientist
Anna Katharine is an Associate Professor of Enology with special expertise in wine sensory evaluation. She led the effort to establish VineSleuth’s proprietary wine evaluation methods, ensuring that human perception was a cornerstone while guaranteeing procedural consistency. Anna Katharine maintains labs at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and the New York State Agricultural Extension Station in Geneva, NY, where her research focuses on yeast nutrition, red wine color and tannin, and the development of regional wine identity. Anna Katharine earned an MS in Food Science (Enology specialization) from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in Food Science (Flavor Chemistry specialization) from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.
Lead Software Engineer
Dick is a specialist in Scala and Java, with particular expertise in distributed systems, predictive analytics, big data, grid computing, and data architecture, especially in the domains of scientific and mathematical problem solving. Dick’s twenty years of development management experience ensure our wine database is accurate, useful, and ever-improving. Dick earned a MSc in Computer Science from the University of Kent at Canterbury and has received awards from Oracle and Typesafe for his work with the Java and Scala platforms.
VineSleuth’s sensory panelists are winemakers, wine writers and educators, sommeliers, and other wine professionals who have passed our rigorous tests for repeatability and consistency in wine evaluation.
